Understanding NDIS Eligibility Requirements
If you are considering applying for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), it is important to understand the eligibility criteria before starting the process.
The NDIS provides funding and support to Australians living with permanent and significant disability. However, access is based on specific requirements set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Below is a clear overview of the NDIS eligibility requirements for new applicants in Australia.
Age Requirements
To meet NDIS eligibility requirements:
-
You must be under 65 years of age at the time you apply.
-
If you are already an NDIS participant before turning 65, you may continue receiving support.
-
If you are applying for the first time at age 65 or over, you may instead be directed to aged care services.
Residency Requirements
You must also meet Australian residency criteria. To qualify, you must:
-
Be an Australian citizen, or
-
Hold a Permanent Visa, or
-
Hold a Protected Special Category Visa, and
-
Be living in Australia when you apply.
Temporary visa holders are generally not eligible.
Disability Requirements
The core of NDIS eligibility requirements relates to the impact of your disability.
To qualify, you must have:
-
A permanent disability, and
-
A condition that significantly affects your ability to complete everyday activities independently.
This may include difficulties with:
-
Mobility
-
Communication
-
Learning
-
Social interaction
-
Self-care
-
Self-management
Eligibility is not based on diagnosis alone. The NDIA assesses how your condition affects your daily functioning and long-term capacity.
Medical and professional evidence is usually required to demonstrate this impact.
Early Intervention Access
Some individuals may qualify under early intervention requirements.
You may be eligible if:
-
Your condition is likely to become permanent, or
-
Early supports could reduce long-term impacts, or
-
Early intervention could improve your functional capacity over time.
This pathway is particularly relevant for children and young people.
What Happens After Eligibility Is Approved?
Once eligibility is confirmed, you will move into the planning stage. This is where goals are identified and reasonable and necessary supports are discussed.
This stage can feel overwhelming. Understanding funding categories, service options, and how to implement supports effectively is not always straightforward.
This is where the right support makes a real difference.
